About the Book
She's looking for the perfect man. He's looking for the perfect victim.Sydney Shaw, like every single woman in New York, has terrible luck with dating. She's seen it all: men who lie in their dating profile, men who stick her with the dinner bill, and worst of all, men who can't shut up about their mothers. But finally, she hits the jackpot.
Her new boyfriend is utterly perfect. He's charming, handsome and works as a doctor at a local hospital. Sydney is swept off her feet.
Then the brutal murder of a young woman-the latest in a string of deaths across the coast-confounds police. The primary suspect? A mystery man who dates his victims before he kills them.
Sydney should feel safe. After all, she is dating the guy of her dreams. But she can't shake her own suspicions that the perfect man may not be as perfect as he seems. Because someone is watching her every move, and if she doesn't get to the truth, she'll be the killer's next victim...
What I thought
I'm not that much of a fan of crime fiction, murders and mysteries these days. I used to like a psychological thriller or two but even those I don't go out of my way to read unless they sound particularly enticing. However I recently got a short story which was part of the Alibi's collection, free on Amazon Prime. Death Row was a really good read and had some dark humour to it, which was what made me decided to give this book a go as I seemed to like this author's writing.
Sydney Shaw is a great character. In spite of some of the awkward situations she finds herself in, there is always a lightness to the story, she always managed to bring a smile to my face with her humorous thoughts on dating and some of the unfortunates she comes across on the dating app.
Approaching her mid thirties Sydney is a bit fed up of her mum always on her case about finding 'the one' but more importantly constantly reminding her daughter the biological clock is ticking and when will there be signs of a much anticipated grandchild on the horizon.
Meanwhile running alongside Sydney's story, the book takes us back in time to another character Tom. We meet Tom while he's still at school, Tom's life at home isn't so good, living with his mum and his abusive, alcohol fuelled Dad. He's only happy when he's at school where he's infatuated with one of his class mates Daisy.
The two stories run parallel in alternating chapters, both equally compelling, gritty and thrilling, keeping you on the edge and guessing. It's a twisty story which keeps you turning the pages. I enjoyed it very much and would definitely read more by this author.
